How quickly can the brain rewire?

Think back to the last time you learned a new skill.

Perhaps you picked it up right away - no iteration needed. Depending on the complexity, however, it likely took weeks, months, years or even decades. Science can’t provide a fixed timeline for change - and if a TikTok or Instagram influencer says otherwise…..thank you, next! There are too many variables (human, natural, supernatural?) for a one-size-fits-all-solution-to-everything.

But here’s the good news…you’re never too late to learn something new. It’s called neuroplasticity. And it’s the latest internet buzz word, particulary of interst to scientists and meditators.

But neuroplasticity is the outcome. It’s the goal. In order to support change, systems need to be established to support it. As author James Clear writes, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

Enter the practice of mindfulness. A learned skill that has the potential to result in “transformative health behavior change.

In 2020, I learned I have not one, but 2 lazy eyes.

Plus a shit load of other things …

Grief is an overwhelming painful emotion with absolutely no predetermined timeline, therapy works, brain rewiring and epigenetics is REAL and mindfulness is a learned skill that converts observation and insight into meaningful change.

Yeah…this time was wild. So much change at once was a fast-track path to growth and it forced me to reevaluate how I (literally) see the world.

So I started to get curious about…

  • Mindfulness

I’m a 15+ year yogi, but my practice completely changed when I integraed somatic awareness - a fancy term for mindfulness of the body. In fact, I’m 🤏 close to a handstand. Y’all…this is ONE example of how mindfulness impacted my day-to-day life.

  • Therapy

As James Clear writes, accountability “creates an immediate cost to inaction.” I don’t believe we’re meant to go it alone. I chose to invest in cognitive behavioral therapy, physical therapy, massage therapy and vision therapy. Which really begs the question…what is therapy?

  • Neuroscience

When I learned the eyes are an extension of the brain, I started.to dig dig dig into neuroscience, neuroplasticity, epigenetics…you name it. I even debated going back to school for a degree in neuroscience.

  • Time

It takes time to change. It takes time to notice the change. And even more time to notice the pattern of change. So perhaps this category is really patience, self-compassion, heart but for the more logically hardened, like me, time is more accessible term.

What can be accomplished with mindful awareness?
